What Meaningful Use means?
We can use very simplified definition of meaningful use is:
“significantly improved health information’s outcome maintained by electronic records systems”.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 specifies main components of Meaningful Use :
- The use of a certified EHR in a meaningful manner, such as e-Prescribing.
- The use of EHR technology for electronic exchange of health information to improve quality of health care.
- The use of EHR technology to submit clinical quality and other measures.
US government categorized the incentives is as follows about the meaningful use of EHRs:
- Improve care coordination
- Reduce healthcare disparities
- Engage patients and their families
- Improve population and public health
- Ensure adequate privacy and security
Two regulations have been released, one of which defines the “meaningful use” objectives, as follows:
- that providers must meet to qualify for the bonus payments
- the other which identifies the technical capabilities required for certified EHR technology
Meaningful Use Certification
To qualify for financial incentives, health care providers must use be used Certified EHR system which is Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ATCB), which is also approved by the National coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).
Following precautions must be remember for both Health care providers and patients about their electronic health information technology (health IT) products and systems as follows:
- EHR system must be secure
- maintain data confidential
- open system to work with other systems easily
- must have ability to perform full functionality
- upgradable
